Like you, I have seen claims of affiliate programs making people rich – they claim you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, even a month, without having to do a thing.
Really?!
Well, yes, I personally know a few affiliate marketers who earn a very decent living through affiliate programs. Truly, some of them are millionaires.
Also, it’s true that once you have it figured out, making money as an affiliate is fairly easy. You don’t need start-up capital and every time someone buys the affiliate product through your website, you make money.
So making money online with an affiliate program must be a piece of cake and everyone can’t help but succeed, right?
No, WRONG. The cold hard fact is that for every affiliate marketing success story out there, there are thousands more who’ve failed to make any money with an affiliate program.
BUT that absolutely does NOT mean you are doomed to failure. Because if others have succeeded, so can you.
Let me share some tips so you can avoid failure.
Choose the Right Niche
You must choose a suitable niche for your business. I firmly believe that the right approach is to choose the niche that you are passionate about, or at least interested in. You will need to spend a substantial amount of time talking about and researching the topics in this niche. How will you stay motivated and focused if you do not have the least bit of interest?
Saying that though, do make sure that there is a market for your niche! For example, say you love macro photography (extreme close up photography of usually tiny objects – one of mine, actually!), but that doesn’t mean that it can make you money online. So you need to choose wisely.
One way to find out if a niche is of interest to buyers is by checking its ranking on sites such as eBay and Clickbank using Google Trends.
Only promote high-quality affiliate programs you believe in and would consider buying yourself
If you wouldn’t buy the product yourself, why would you expect your customers to? If the product is no good, you’ll lose credibility and the trust of your customers and never make a repeat sale. Eventually word would get out and you’ll lose your business.
On the other hand, if you believe in your product, you’ll be more successful at marketing it because you understand how your customers can benefit and most people will know what you say about the product is honest and not just a sales pitch.
Get lots (and lots and lots) of traffic visiting the websites you use for your affiliate programs
There is no two ways about it. No traffic equals no sales. You must therefore make the effort to drive traffic to your website. For example, make sure you use the appropriate keywords in your title and content so that your website ranking is moved up in search engines. Blogging is also an effective method to get website traffic, provided you regularly create fresh and meaningful content that benefit and interest your readers.
To summarize
These are just some of the things you must do to become a successful affiliate. If you decide to go ahead with one or more affiliate programs, read up, learn and get as many tips as you can, ideally from someone who has a track record of success. Look for reliable resources. Check out different affiliate programs and try out various ways to drive traffic to your website and from there to your affiliate programs. Learn from your mistakes and keep what works.
It takes time and effort to succeed with affiliate marketing but others have, so why not you? One thing I gathered from the very successful internet marketers I know – it doesn’t depend on your background, education, past circumstances, current status or profession. As long as you are willing and determined to do what it takes.
